The well and the short strip of land between the road and garden was formally part of the Idsworth Estate. In 1918 the Trustees of the Settled Idworth Estate sold by auction land in Clanfield, Catherington and East Meon. The intention was to exclude the Well Head from the sale lots. Sir Dudley Clarke-Jervoise wished to present it to the Village of Clanfield for their enjoyment. However erroneously it was included in the sale lots. The well was sold to Mr Noyce. The error was brought to light in 1937 when the Parish Council has tidied up and re-thatched the well cover.   The ownership of the well and surrounding land was the subject of a dispute until 1986, when it was purchased by Sir Lynton White on behalf of Clanfield Parish Council from a Mrs Kenny and separately a Mrs Allman.

The Wellhead was Grade 11 listed in 1985. (Listing entry number 1302360)
